Corsettery’s New Vintage-Inspired Line Has a Story to Tell
As seen in Vintage Boudoir Magazine Issue 14
Women have been conforming to corsets for nearly 4,000 years, with an era of the 1940s showcasing pin-up models who dominated a number of magazines to lonely soldiers overseas with their sensual curves and glamour. While the corsets of that era looked rather confining, their sole purpose was to give the appearance of a slim silhouette. For women of a certain demographic seeking a line of corsets that infuses these subtle glamorous touches from yesteryears timeless elegance, not to mention a vintage lifestyle, such garments can now be found online with Corsettery. A bespoke corset company founded seven years ago by, Irina Pyilyowa with the business expertise of Robert Montano, their union has evolved into a prominent global brand destined to become an icon of modern luxury.
The brand’s prevailing sensibility is pure sexual glamour – a distinct cocktail of alluring elegance and impudence that has no comparable competitor’s equivalent of sassiness. At Corsettery, the average authentic corset is no longer made with whalebones; they are all designed with steel boning and top-to-bottom lacing, which all draw in the waist by four to five inches, leaving one with a silhouette that could tempt a Victorian. This alluring history is easily defined in 1955 after Dior’s New Look collection of 1947, which created a cinched waist to be fashionable. “I want to show women how they can create extremely stylish looks with the glimpse of this eternal style that appeared in the 20th century when the female spirit finally started to become free,” explains Irina. With a design element that produces a real appreciation of the woman’s form, Corsettery corsets are helping the love and fascination of waist training to continue and become part every women’s wardrobe.
Corsettery has found a steady demand for its authentic corsets with their debut vintage-inspired line, the old Hollywood couture collection, which has reproduced the lacing and form of a bygone era, transforming the modern day woman with a lady-like demure. With the concept in mind for a number of years, Irina has always envisioned a partnership that would join her adept bespoke corset-making skills with the historical knowledge of an era that has formed a platform of classic style as we know it today. “The day I virtually met vintage style blogger, model, and writer, Doris Hobbs, I couldn’t believe my eyes! She had the appearance of a woman displayed from within my 1950s sewing books. It was then, I called Robert declaring: "We need to debut our vintage collection with Doris, because she is vintage perfection!” she eagerly states. Inevitably, this statement over the next several months has developed into a partnership which consisted of design research, prototype test fittings, and in-studio photo shoots, to a well curated collection of timeless grace.
Any woman with a sense of glam can easily connect with a number of designs and the inspiration and homage behind each design. From a dominate-minded Ramona, to an international shift of romance with Maria and distinct glamour of proper style with Teddy, this debut collection was made with the goal to combine the patterns of a corset and the elegant look of the 1950s, all while giving the opportunity to be worn in the bedroom or as classic daywear. The debut collection features more than half a dozen exclusive designs. Among the series of designs, a few convey the timeless touch of utmost glamour; the Elizabeth corset, for example was created with the thought of utilizing tailored wardrobe pieces as Irina explains, “Our main goals are to make high quality bespoke corsets that will be tailored to each individual.”
Many women simply enjoy the confidence and sensuality they experience when their figure is enhanced by a beautifully laced corset; having been proven to be a very functional, intimate and now a desired piece to one’s wardrobe. It comes as no surprise that there are very few brands that promote corsets as daywear separates highlighting a classic motif, until Corsettery.
